1.) How is the young girl Hagar sees on the beach like Hagar?
She is bossing around the male in the scenario, she is not letting him have an opinion and is telling him what to use and how.

means that nothing lasts forever, and sometimes you don't know why things don't last.

3.) Why did Hagar object to John's and Lottie's daughter's marriage?
She objected due to the fact they do not have a cent to their name, and are very young.

4.) Who else plays house other than the children on the beach?
Arlene and John play house in Hagar's. They pretend like it's their own.

5.) How do Hagar (and) Lottie plan to stop the marriage?
Hagar and Lottie plan to send Arlene to work for Telford's cousin In the East. She could work for Caroline who has a big house and no maid.

6.) What past incident does Lottie not remember?
Lottie does not remember when she euthanized the baby chicks.

Dirge Without Music- questions
I am not resigned to the shutting away of loving hearts in the hard ground.
So it is, and so it will be, for so it has been, time out of mind:

Chapter 6


1.) Why did John return to Manawaka?
He moved back to live with his father. Not much was happening for him with his mother.
2.) What had happened to the Prairie?
Resession and the dust blowing everywhere. (I dont know the specific name for it)
3.) What did John do for Bram?
Fed him booze and helped him die.
4.) Who is John dating?
Arlene. Lottie's daughter.
5.) How did Bram's "sidekick" die?
charlie beam (the drunk) He was a mattee. He died of exposure, he was drunk and probably froze to death.
6.) What had happened to the Stone Angel
Someone smeared lipstick on the face and tipped it over, face first into the ground.

John was at the age of twelve when his mother and him left.

He suggested that Hagar and John boil eggs to take on the train.

He read Eaton's catalogue.
3.) How did Bram act in front of the threshing gang?
He would act like a bigger, hard working man, showing off infront of them.
4.) What did Bram do to disgrace the old Currie store?
He peed on the steps.

5.) Why did Hagar drive herself to the hospital when giving birth to John?
Bram was not home. He was out fixing a fence.

6.) What Currie heirloom does Hagar give to John?
A pin.

Sold eggs.

-She is unable to show emotion or doesn't know how to (when Marvin leaves for the War).

Stone Angel Chapter 3 Questions

1) What was Soldier's fate?
Soldier had ran away in the winter when Hagar was two months pregnant, Bram found him later in spring, he had got his leg caught in a barb wire fence and the cold probably killed him.
2) Why are these lines spoken by Hagar uncharacteristic of
her: "I'm sorry about it Bram. I knew you were fond of him "
They do not represent her Character well because usually she is heartless and does not give people sympathy.
3) How are the old Hagar and Bram alike?
Hagar and Bram are very alike because they both are extremely stubborn and will not do what anyone else suggests.
4) How was Bram like Jason Currie?
Bram is like Jason Currie because he wanted to have a boy that he could leave the property and farm to. A successor.
5) Who is Rita?
Rita is Mrs. Steiner daughter, who Mrs. Steiner lived with before the home.
6) Explain Hagar's statemenr, "Strangers are easier to assess."
Strangers are easier to assess means in Hagar's eyes, that people are easier to judge fully when you do not know them. There are no boundaries of what to avoid, and you don't have to worry about a conciense, seeing as you do not care about the person.
7) What lie does Hagar tell at the nursing home?
Hagar said that one of her son's died in the last war to Mrs. Steiner, which did not really happen.

1) What was the name of Bram's first wife?
Bram's first wife name, was Clara. She had died of a burst spleen, nothing to have done with giving birth.

2) Who was the only person to attend Hagar's wedding?
Auntie Doll was the only person that attended Hagar and Bram's wedding.

3) What did Bram give Hagar for a wedding present?
Matt gave Hagar their mothers shall. Bram gave Hagar a cut-glass decanter with a silver top.

4) What is the name of the nursing home Hagar is taken to visit?
The name of the nursing home is Silverthreads nursing home.

5) What was Matt's wife's fate after his death?
"A year after Matt's death, Mavis married Alden Cates and went to live with him on the farm, and in the years that followed she bore him three youngsters and she raised Rhode Island Reds and took prizes at all the local poultry shows and grew plump as a pullet herself, so thank goodness fate deals a few decent cards sometimes."

One of Bram's daughters was named Gladys. The other, Jes.

He had a beard, was a big built man, and he carried himself so well, he was greatful. Although, he had a big mouth and blunt.

Hagar and Bram really marred eacother for the qualities they later found they could not bear. Bram for Hagar's manners and speech, and Hagar for Bram's not having those qualities.

STONE ANGEL CHAPTER 1

1) What do we learn about the narrator's mother in the opening of the novel?
The narrator`s (Hagar) mother had died in childbirth. Her tombstone is a stone angel with big wings, in the winter that are pitted by the snow, and in summer by the blown grit.
2) Where does the narrator grow up?
The narrator grows up in Manawaka, Manitoba. It is a fictional town used in a lot of Margaret Laurence novels.
3) How would you describe Hagar as she explains what she's like at ninety (pp.
5-6)
At the age of ninety, Hagar has an good memory for her age. She also smokes. Her son Marvin, and daughter Doris take care of her. She is not aloud to have a lock on her door, they have probably had incedents where they have had to get to her quickly. She is extremely judgmental. She is very similar with her father, very smart, strong willed, witty, and their is some resentment.
4) What kind of a relationship did she have with her father?
Her father wishes her brothers were as smart as her, or that she was male, because in this time males were dominant and could do more.
5) Explain what we learn about Mr. Currie and Hagar from the foot ruler incident.
She is very stubborn and wins the foot ruler incident. GET MORE INFO ON THIS QUESTION.
6) Where do the Curries come from?
The father is from Scotland, they are Scottish. Scottish people are very strong willed and the wealthy people think they are much better.

7) What do we learn about Mr. Currie from his involvement with the new church?
We learn that Mr. Currie was a main big donation of the church. He said that they said his and ... name's first, because they must have donated the most. He also likes to be proud.

8) How do you explain Mr. Currie's remark "Consumption? That's contagious, isn't
it? Well, the Lord works in wondrous ways His will to perform. "
Mr. Currie does not care about her dying, he is thinking "wow, if we had actually spent time together, maybe I could have been affected too." Thus she was unwilling, so he did not get shot down in his own mind and it saved him from a nasty contagious death.
9) Why won't Matt's father allow him to go hunting with Jules Tonnerre?
He is not aloud to go because he thinks he will get hurt, Jules Tonnerre is not as rich and has some native blood in him. He is half Nattee. Racism is another flaw in Mr. Currie's character.
10) How does Dan die and what do we learn about Hagar by her refusal to put on
the old plaid shawl and comfort Dan?
Dan becomes gravely ill with pneumonia, Hagar and Matt know he will not survive that much lover. She refuses to put on the shawl to pretend to be the mother he calls, is because she says, " I'm not a bit like her" because her Mom was weak and she does not want to be like her. Matt ends up getting the job done.
11) What is Lottie able to do that Hagar is not, in the town dump?
Partly hatched little baby chicks, half broken. Lottie then kills them, which Hagar can not do. She basically Euthanize's them. Hagar will not go near them though.
12) Which characters do you associate with Hagar's past and which do you associate with
her present?
The characters I see are Jason, Matt, Dan, her father, Auntie Doll, Lottie, Charolette. In the future, Marvin, Doris.
